March Birthdays

They are at it Again

There were only three members who left us this past month.

Remembrance

Well it’s here! Monday March 3rd. I hope everyone who can attend makes it. A lot of hard work goes into this get together,

The flyer mentions RG&E’s help in funding this event. Well the only thing they help us with is the postage for the Rochester Picnic. So I’d advise anyone attending the Florida picnic to bring something for the “kitty”.

I got this email attached to an obit I sent out, Note I really don’t know if it was Mellon Bank or “our” Human Resources Department, but I’ll leave it to you guys to figure out “who”. Also note that there was no warning letter sent that the  deposit was being “held”.

Tom,

On the first day of each month for the past 14 years, RG&E has automatically deposited $100.00 to my checking account. Since I did not sign up for any of their medical plans, this pretty well covered my unreimbursed medical expenses. Imagine my surprise when I got a $35.00 overdraft notice from my bank on February 7.  I went to the bank, immediately, only to find that the deposit had not been received, and I had written a couple of checks, with the assumption that all was well.  I phoned BNY Mellon, and their people told me that the direct deposit had not been authorized. So, on Monday, Feb. 11,  I spoke with Retirement people at R. G. & E.. Evidently, I was one of 18 people who had reported a discrepancy the previous week. Hopefully, this will be reconciled on March 1. But, I wonder how many other people never received their deposits, and also, why this oversight occurred. (I hope it's an oversight.

As I keep saying, these minions are not our friends.

Jeff Trost sent me this note about Jim Murphy. I added it to our Obituary Page on the web site.

This note brings to mind the fun it was to work at RG&E in the old days.

Hi Tom,

Murph was the best. A man with a great sense of humor. I remember when I was hired into Maps & Records Murph was to teach me about the transformer serial number files, how they were inventoried and mapped. He had all these piles of pink slips. He told me, "You move this pile to this pile, this pile to this pile, this pile to this pile."  I asked what about "this pile?" He told me to "throw it away, because its been around so long."

Coming Events?

They have their Celebration of Aging luncheon happening on March 25th at noon at the Convention Center and our keynote speaker will be Noami Judd.

Naomi will be speaking about “aging gratefully”.

Tickets are $55 each and tables of 10 are just $500 and this includes a nice sit down meal.

It would be great to get a group of Pioneer Club members together to attend this event!! To purchase a table or tickets folks can call Julie directly at 287-6382 or go online to https://www.lifespan-roch.org/celebration-of-aging.htm.

Last month I added this appeal.

Every year about this time I put in an appeal for lists of events you might be having that some of our members like to know about.

I have, as of yesterday, 583 email address in this mailing list.

If you wish something listed, just send me the details at thclegg@gmail.com”

So far I have heard nothing. So I put some hints below.

This cold weather keeps me inside where I have too much time to think.

I was thinking of where we retiree’s go next (beside in the ground) when the money runs out, or we become infirm, or (heaven forbid) our spouse dies.

Do we become a burden on our children, or live in a cardboard box under a bridge? If when we retired we elected to take the total retirement and not opted to take a lower amount so our spouse would continue to receive a check?

Once I tried to check out what was eligible to us retirees in rent stipends. So I drove over to the County’s building on St Paul Street. I was surprised to find a line out the door waiting to see one of their reps. I tried on different days of the week and at different times if the day. Same line every time so after a month, I just gave up.

This time I’m going to bother the folks at Life Span and see if they can point me in the correct directions.

Let’s face reality, we are all bring in less now then when we were working. There are no cost-of-living raises (except Social Security, and that’s a laugh). And just to help us out, the government is planning to make up the monetary shortfalls in the new Health Care System by taking money from Medicare.

(I had a pace maker “installed” in December. Medicare is supposed to pay all in hospital “stuff”. I got a bill from Strong for almost $400! So much for Medicare Part A covering in hospital stuff.)

I don’t know what bank she uses but the last time I bounced a check it was $35 per check in overdraft charges tacked on to my account.
