Florida Picnic

"Above and Beyond"

I received an email about the health and welfare of a one of our members. I’ll pass it along for your information

Hello all,

I do not have good access to a computer in the hospital. I was admitted on March 6 with bacterial pneumonia. It has caused major damage to my left lung and the ability for my heart to pump the blood/oxygen levels I need to function. My 02 saturation level is about 89% if I just sit and don't move. They will not clear me to fly till my 02 levels are 95% or higher.

My options are to stay in Aruba till I recover on my own, buy an oxygen concentrator, (none on the island) or come home on a medical air ambulance jet. Thank God that we have flight insurance....

If you should need to talk to me, my Aruba cell number is 00297-743-5198..

I hope to know more by this Tuesday 3/19 as how well the IV antibiotics are working and how well I am breathing. Praise God that the 103 fever has gone. Stella is doing a great job holding in there.

Our dear Aruban daughter Maureen has moved Stella into the LaCabana Resort where she works. Please pray for my continued recovery, for the doctors that are treating me, for Stella to stay strong through all the stressfulness. I praise my Lord Jesus Christ for bring me this far and trust that with your prayers,

He will bring me through this.

I got this email from Florida. It looks as if the picnic is     regaining its strength.

Hi Tom,

The picnic was a successful event despite the day starting out with temperatures in the 30s.  By the time people started arriving we had a very sunny day and the temperature had recovered to the 60s.

There were 41 attending.  Twenty-seven of these were former employees and fourteen were guests.  I'm also hoping to send you some pictures once I receive them.

Hope this helps,

Lee Harris

When visitors first enter the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago they will hear a sound like wind chimes coming from above them and their attention will be drawn upward 24 feet to the ceiling of the two-story high atrium.

Dog tags of the more than 58,000 service men and women who died in the Vietnam War hang from the ceiling.

The 10-by-40-foot sculpture, entitled Above & Beyond, was designed by Ned Broderick and Richard Stein.

The tens of thousands of metal dog tags are suspended 24 feet in the air, 1 inch apart, from fine lines that allow them to move and chime with shifting air currents.

Museum employees using a kiosk and laser pointer help visitors locate the exact dog tag with the imprinted name of their lost friend or relative.

Logging Monster Trees

I must admit that I like old photos, and I also “man’s” ability to overcome natures obstacles. I feel sadness for the destruction of these magnificent giants.

But “damn” I bet they made one hell of a bang when they fell!.

Logging
                                                          in the Pacific
                                                          Northwest

Look at the length of the two-man hand saw and heavy duty axes they used to drop these tremendous trees. It is almost inconceivable to think of cutting a tree this size with a hand saw.

See the
                                                          length of the
                                                          hand saw they
                                                          needed

The work required very strong men (and horses) working long days for minimal pay. Could you imagine doing this to earn a living?

The work
                                                          required very
                                                          strong men to
                                                          cut such
                                                          trees

After a tree was finally felled it took a week or more to cut it up into sections that could be managed (somehow) and transported by train to a lumber yard.

After
                                                          felling, it
                                                          took a week or
                                                          more to cut up
                                                          the tree

Maneuvering the logs down the mountain to the train was a complex job. I didn’t do any research on this, but I would be willing to bet that many men lost their lives doing this dangerous work. One slip and a hunk of wood as big as a hotel is rolling your way!

The other question that begs an answer is how did they get those logs onto the flatbeds of that train?

Some of

                                                          the logs were
                                                          larger than
                                                          the train
                                                          engine...
