The Pioneer’s Club Newsletter

Volume 2, Issue 10

November, 2008

A lot of changes went on with the web site because of my move.  The first and most important is that the web site moved.  Now I don’t mean it moved to my new address, but it left my little server and went to a new home on a commercial web site server.

And let me tell you it made a real improvement!  I knew that my little web server was a little weak, but until I moved our web site, I never knew how much.  Our web site behaves just like the big guys now when it comes to speed.

There were the usual problems involved in moving a web site some of the “links” are broken and some of the graphics got lost, but I’m working to get all those little things fixed. (But my first priority is unpacking all my boxes from the move).

There is a new benefit to all  of you from moving our web site.  The hosting company (Network Solutions) gives us 1000 email addresses (with 500 meg of storage each) as part of our service.  These addresses are in the format “<your name>@ thePioneersClub.org” (tom@thepioneersclub.org for example).  While this doesn’t seem like a big thing at first, but this email address doesn’t need changing if you move to a new area.  And if you’re on vacation, you can check your email from any web browser by just typing http://mail.ThePioneersClub.org and signing in.

I should have a demo set up by next month’s newsletter that you can look at.

To get an address, either Arnie or I have to set it up.  You can pick any name you wish, (but Tom@ThePioneersClub.org and Arnie@ThePioneersClub.org are already gone).

There’s a FAQ that can be read at http://mail.thepioneersclub.org for more general information.

Fall and Winter Activities

Wow!  Did I get replies from September’s Newsletter when I asked about activities!

And in keeping with an old RG&E tradition, the majority of the replies consisted of either breakfast or lunch.  What can I say?  We all like to eat.

Just look at the size of some of us (myself included) if you need any evidence.

Here are a few of the responses I got:

Retirees from Telephone Service get together every other month at a restaurant that is announced at the current luncheon.  Next luncheon will be on Oct. 14th, at the Brook House on Ridge Rd W. at 12 noon.  We do make reservations and will need to call in advance.  (I missed this one because of my move. If anyone knows the November /December location, please let me know.—Tom)

Marketing folks occasionally gather at Bayfront Restaurent, Empire Blvd., 8:30 am. Have folks send an email if they want to be invited.- Dave Whitlock [dwhitloc@rochester.rr.com]

Retirees from Electric Substations meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch at 12:00 noon at Keenan's restaurant on Ridge Road.  All are welcomed.

And here’s the two I listed in last month’s newsletter:

A group of “old” Systems Information personnel meet once a month for lunch, on the first Friday, at Bugaboo Creek on Jefferson Road in Henrietta.

Another group of “Main Office” types from Customer’s Accounting meet every other week for breakfast (around 9:00 am, they are retired you know.) at the Duchess Restaurant, on the corner of Route 250 and Route 441 in Penfield, NY.

There’s also a Christmas Open House, and the proceeds go to a very worthy cause.

Kenneth Kuzia [kkuzia@rochester.rr.com] wrote:

“In the current Pioneers' Newsletter you asked to be informed of activities to include in future issues.  Well, I have a great one for you!  Each year at Christmas time, Charlie Venishel (current employee & Foreman for Gas Crews - Eastern Monroe) and his wife, Cora, sponsor a "Holiday Open House" in their home at 100 Henderson Drive in Penfield.

Charlie & Cora decorate their home with thousands of lights inside and out with rooms and rooms of Department 56 miniature villages.

Also, Santa and Mrs. Claus are there for the kids (of all ages) along with the Snow Queen and, this year  Old Man Winter makes an appearance (formerly, Kenny, the Parking Lot Elf, Third Class) and other "Elfen Helpers."

This year it’s Saturday and Sunday, December  6th, 7th, 13th and 14th from 6:00PM to 9:00 PM.

And it’s $3.00 at the door and the proceeds go to the Rochester Ronald McDonald House.

This is a great thing to do with the “grand kids” and it benefits a worthy cause.”

Let’s keep those activities coming . If you want something added, just email me at:

October Newsletter

I must start out by apologizing for October’s  Newsletter not getting written.  I moved to a new location on October 1st and with all the confusion I just forgot to write it.

I’ll try to do better next month.

Tom

It is with a sad heart I must report on the passing of William E. Bellows, Vera’s husband.  Bill left us on October 6, 2008 at 88 years of age.

We all met Bill through our associations with Vera.  While Bill was not an RG&E employee, he fit right in and soon became a friend.

He will be remembered fondly by those of us who knew him.

On behalf of all the members of the Pioneer’s Club, we express our condolences to Vera and her family on their loss.

A Message from Vera

I received a note from Vera requesting I add the following to this newsletter:

“To All my RG&E Friends,

Many thanks to all who took the time to remember my husband, Bill Bellows, who passed away on October 6th.

Your words of sympathy, either by card, e-mail, phone, or with a hug at the services have helped tremendously during this very trying time. You all are truly my wonderful extended family.

My love to you all

Vera Bellows”

At the bottom of her note, she added:

“Dan Paprocki’s (T&D Lines) wife Jean passed away on October 18, 2008 surrounded by her loving family at their home in Sun City West, AZ.  Dan said Jean did make her 61st birthday about a month before she passed away. Our deepest sympathies to Dan and his  family.”

As usual, even in all her sorrow, Vera still remembers others.

Get out there and vote early!

Thanksgiving

Arnie and I wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Don’t eat too much…….
