Pioneer’s Club Newsletter

Do you Remember?

This section is dedicated to the coming and goings of former RG&E employees, and their remembrances of all things RG&E.

We all remember certain fellow employees.  Well in this section I will highlight what they are up to since leaving RG&E, and their special stories about our former          employer.

(Reprinted here is what I received from Don in an email.)

I'm Don Jeerings, Retired from the Electric Meter & Lab (35 years)

Present Age 80 , Born in Genesee Hospital on Aug 8th 1927.  Forgot what year I retired but I worked for Leon Harris.

Originally worked at Front Street, (1966) later moved to the operations    center at Jefferson Rd. There was a radio tower at the Jefferson Rd location ( West, North West) of the center that I had a major hand in engineering. Also worked on supervisory control systems (SCADA) at stations 1, 5, 34, 42, 38, 49, 6, 3, 80, 82, Ginna (forgot number) 122 etc.

Worked with instrumentation at Electric Load dispatchers at Front St, PASNY and Power Control Center at Guilderland NY. Was involved with the Black out and restart of  generators at station 3 for blackout recovery.     Installed and made water temperature recorders in Lake Ontario prior to breaking ground at Ginna.  Designed First IR Gas Sniffer truck for Gas department.

Attended RIT as a co-op student with Leonard Whitcraft.

Helped set up First television station and worked on Power Quality problems for Radio station WHAM.

Designed and built special instrumentation for the Gas Utilization Lab under Platt street bridge.

Helped re-wind the Mills Mills in Portageville and the Charmers generator at  station 5.

Worked with Westinghouse on turbine blade breakage problems  at Ginna. Conducted short circuit blade harmonic acceptance test on Ginna generator.

Presently working 5 days a week as a Volunteer at the FAA production     studios

I was recently awarded the "Charles Taylor Master Mechanics" by the FAA. The highest award available to Aircraft Mechanics. I hold a Aircraft          mechanic inspectors license, a Pilots  license, a First Class Commercial Radio operators license.

I used to fly my plane daily to work from Palmyra New York and land it across the road from the Jefferson Rd center (Old Hyland Field) where the shopping center is now located. I got in trouble with the Ivory Tower on East avenue the day I taxied across Jefferson rd and parked the plane  in the company parking lot.

Worked with Presidents Alec Beebee, Ed Nelson, Ralph Mc Cumber, Robert Gina and many I don't remember.  Lots and Lots of adventures and tales to tell.

These are probably strange names and locations to you but a lot of the old timers remember them.

What  would you like to here about?

This is a good example of how RG&E employees keep right on contributing after their retirement. I hope I’ll be able to convince him to share some of his memories with us. I know most of us would enjoy reliving some of the         company’s events through his eyes.

Christmas PartyS

A lot of us get together in small groups over the holidays.  If someone wants to step up and plan something we can get       together in one big group.  Now it doesn’t have to be in          December because everyone is so busy.  It can be in January.

Let’s face it, it’s something to do for those of us who aren’t Snow Birds.

Or if you would like your smaller get together mentioned here, let me know.  I’d be glad to mention them.

For example: About 10-20 of us from the Information Technology Department try and meet for cocktails at a local bar in December every year.  Everybody buys their own drinks and we split the snack cost at the end.

Members Information

When Bill Goodman looked me up in the RG&E Retirees Address Book, and found I wasn’t in it, a light went on in my slightly damaged old mind, “I’ll bet that no one was  keeping the address book up to date   anymore.”

I have a database of all 250 of our Club members.  In it I have some  addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, which you provided to me when you completed the form.

My original purpose for these this information was to be able to contact you on Club business.

Now, I am a great believer in personal privacy.  Keeping that in mind, I’ll forward  any email you send me looking for a person, to that person, if I have an email for them.  If they wish, they can “get back to you”.  Now if I find out someone wants the addresses to sell “Amway” or something.  They’re out! This list is not for that kind of “stuff”.

For those individuals I don’t have contact information for, I can put your inquiry in here and maybe someone reading this newsletter can help you get in contact with them.

Club E-Mail

I created an E-Mail Address for the Club.  If you want to send regular old e-mail to who ever is running the Club in the future just address it to                          Pioneers_Club@thclegg.com. Someone will read it.

Web Site

We are always updating the Club’s Web Site with information we hope will be of interest to you.

Sometimes, I am sad to say,  the updates are to the Obituary Page.

Please check the Web Page at:

Junk Mail Filter

The junk mail filter on my email client works really well.

It usually  captures between 50 and 100 junk emails every day.  So I love it!

But sometimes it works too well , it captures stuff it shouldn’t, like email from you guys.

Now I try to scan everything it captures every   couple of days looking for anything from any of you, and add you to my “Safe Senders” list.  Do it doesn’t happen again. But I’m getting old and might miss one.

So if you don’t get some sort of response from me in a couple of days, figure I missed it and send it again.  The second time put something in the Subject area that will catch my attention, or send it to Arnie. (He hasn’t figured out how to turn on his junk mail filter yet.)

Please forgive me, I’m not ignoring you, I’m just  getting old……..
